I think it's as wes said, the threat of pirates early game is going to be quite substantial. It is going to take a while for organizations to get a hold on how to protect their convoys, and with players going in all different directions it is going to be very difficult to get anything meaningful from the chaos.

Also, the merchants and starfarers are the definition of space cows. At the moment we don't know what it will take to protect them, and IF anyone is going to be that interested in protecting large vulnerable ships. I would consider it a huge investment risk to purchase one at this point. It would be a shame if one spent all that money on a ship that they can't even use for 6 months because of how often they get blown up (and yes, insurance will cover that... but you have to suck up the loss of cargo and that gets expensive!)

On that end, i think the Retaliators and Connies might prove their worth: they got enough guns to discourage the casual attacker.

I think the pirate threat is over exaggerated. Pirating is going to be an art, disabling ships rather than blowing them up. I believe a lot of people have this romantic vision of setting up elaborate ambushes and just taking whatever they want. Problem is there is a risk versus reward factor that most people don't understand or don't acknowledge. If you end up sustaining 10,000 credits worth of damage stealing a 5,000 credit cargo you won't be in business for long. Certain cargos of mine certainly wont just be handed over without a fight. Again the risk v reward come into play. I plan on taking my starfarer out as much as possible, liquid cargo will be a lot harder for pirates to deal with. Smart pirate will be a threat yes, but idiotic pirates will be a bigger annoyance in the beginning.

But in turn, a starfarer is a lot more vulnerable than most other ships.  Two turrets, chunky, slow, lots of cargo, and only two crew.  A boarding action would easily result in the loss of the ship.

I never said I was going alone. ;) I was just saying liquid cargo is harder for pirates to deal with. I really hope this doesn't turn out being like eve where you have nice fancy ships, but are too afraid of losing it to actually use it.

...'Tali ho.  Big enough for cargo, enough guns to make people think twice and pay for when they are wrong that second time.

Yes, disabling a ship will indeed be difficult. But here's something I'm not sure you've considered...

Online players are assholes. There's likely going to be a large group of people who would blow you up in your starfarer 'just because they can'.

Believe me I've considered all of the possibilities. This is all assuming their raiding party is larger and more organized than my escort. Also assuming the fact they are willing to blow up a fuel laden ship which has been stated to be a VERY bad idea because of the sizable explosion.  Any statement I make someone can come up with a counter statement. The main point I am trying to get across is use some common sense when you fly, and don't be afraid to take your big toys out for a spin with proper escorts and teamwork. Your ships are merely tools to achieve a job and can be replaced.

Fuel is only explosive if it has oxygen to mix with. So its more likely that your cargo will 'spill' rather than ignite. No fire in space.

Aside from that, I agree, one should exercise common sense. This being the moral of me saying pirates are going to be rampant early, take precautions since we don't know how hard it will be to protect the large cargo ships. I'd just be careful if I were you.

Side note, I'll do runs with you if you want in my Retaliator. For a portion of profits of course ; )

I am sure a lot of the ship choices comes down to the cost of these ships. I really wanted to buy the Constellation but i settled for the Freelancer because of monies.

The further the final release of the game gets pushed back, the closer I get to having an actual income, meaning I'll be able to buy myself the Caterpillar/Freelancer that I really want. I'd be willing to keep it at its insurance level and run through dangerous space with an escort as 'training runs' to help us figure out how to handle specific situations. That way we don't lose too much and get invaluable experience.

Updated my ships onto the spreadsheet - looks a little clunky, has anyone optimised it lately? (Just a thought!)

The spreadsheet itself? Yeah it is a little tedious but it gets the job done. wesFist

I just added my ships to spread sheet and it says on left column I have 21 ships but if you count them up it should say 29 ships.

Alright, thx for the info. I will get it all fixed out. We might be going back to the old way of how we made the ship count, just have people manually add their ship to the spreadsheet.
